Manga and Anime News
In my short time as one of your Manga and Anime Gallery Directors I have realized that Fan Art is something that is very often miss-categorized here on deviant art. So in this AR Newsletter we will be using a few examples while I teach you about Fan Art and the Manga and Anime galleries^_^
What is Fan Art?
Fan Art is artwork based on copyrighted material such as books, movies, TV shows, comics, cartoons and games.
What does that mean? It means that anything created that is from the things listed above belong in Fan Art, not in the Manga and Anime gallery. The Manga and Anime gallery are for original works only.
Where should I submit?
Well, that all depends on what you have created. So lets use a couple of examples:
You have drawn Hinata from the hit series Naruto as a sketch on a piece of paper. You then scan her in and line art and color her in photoshop. Where would you submit her when you are done?
Answer: Fan Art > Manga/Anime > Digital > Movies/TV
or Books/Novels.
Why? Well, even though the drawing was done on paper with a pencil, all the lines that are going to show up and all the coloring was done with photoshop so this is a digital piece. But why Movies/TV or Books/Novels? Because Naruto is both a Manga and an Anime so it is both a book and a TV show, so the choice is yours. Just think where you saw it and chose that way. If you are reading the manga and decide to do a fan art, put it in Books/Novels. If you are watching the anime and want to do a fan art, then put it in Movies/TV. Regardless, it
does not belong in the Manga/Anime gallery because it is not orignal.
You decided that you want to do a watercolor painting of Link victorious over Ganon in a anime style from the Game Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After you finish and scan in your masterpiece, where are you going to submit it?
Answer: Fan Art > Manga/Anime > Traditional > Games
Why? First and foremost, you painted this bad boy with a real brush and paints, so it goes into the traditional gallery. Second, Ganon and Link are from the game Legend of Zelda which is owned by Nintendo, so it belongs in the game category. Does this belong in Manga/Anime? No way! This is Fan Art material right here!
Those Funky Gray Areas
Well, its to be expected, so lets try to clear up a few of those things.
Question: I have drawn my original character with Inuyasha at the mall with Shinku. Since this has my character in it I can put it in Manga and Anime right?
Answer: No, you can not. Inuyasha and Shinku are commercial characters from their respective shows, so even though your character is in there, they are there to and they belong in Fan Art
Question: I drew my friends original character, can I post that in Manga and Anime?
Answer: I actually did not know the answer to this, so I asked ^
ArtisticAunJuli about this. Her reply was perfect: "Any drawing of someone else's character (which is in essence copyrighted) is Fan Art". So that about sums that up for you. So, if you send me DD suggestions with someone else's original character I'm going to forward it to ^
ArtisticAunJuli ^_^ So if I were drawing someone's original character I would submit it: Fan Art > Manga/Anime > Digital or traditional > Miscellaneous
Question: I drew my character as the captain of the Starship Enterprise and they are standing on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. They are the only character in the drawing, so I can submit this to Manga/Anime right?
Answer: Actually, no. Fan Art is not only for characters, it is for anything that has to do with a commercial entity. As I stated about, fan art is
artwork based on copyrighted material such as books, movies, TV shows, comics, cartoons and games. It does not say anywhere "characters only". So, in this case, the Starship Enterprise is from Star Trek and a copy written vehicle, so this would also belong in the fan art section.

Closing
In closing, the Manga and Anime gallery is for original works ONLY! We have a Fan Art gallery for that stuff. There are many galleries under the Fan Art gallery, take a peak around and see where you should put your stuff.

If I say that I don't wanna play poker with you... I don't wanna play poker with you. If you keep nagging and asking me over and over again... I'll play poker with you but you have to be warned -I don't stop.
Now, there are collabs. I don't think they go to fan art.
But if I draw a gift/trade/homage to another deviant, with their character, it is fan art alright. Even if I am not necessarily fan of the deviant or character (eg. in a contest)!
